Have you ever thought about what you would do if your ship was called to a mass rescue operation? Many mariners have had the same thoughts but relatively few are ever involved in a rescue at sea.

As mariners, we are required to undertake training so that we can help ourselves and others to deal with emergencies at sea. Mariners are obligated both legally and morally to assist others at sea who are in distress. Are we as prepared as we could be to provide the assistance that is required, particularly if those who need assistance are not seafarers.

This module has been developed in partnership with Human Rights at Sea and will help you to understand the demands that will be placed on you and your crew members if you are ever called on to assist in a mass rescue operation.

After completing this module you will:

  • Know reasons why migrants and refugees choose a sea route
  • Understand how to plan and prepare the ship and crew for possible involvement in large scale rescue operations
  • Know the guidelines and best practice for vessel involved in the rescue of large number of migrants or refuges at sea
  • Know how to safely and orderly embark rescued people
  • Know how to treat rescued people as humanely as the design and limitations of the ship and the capabilities of the crew allow
  • Understand how to arrange disembarkation in a place of safety at the earliest opportunity
