The aim of this title is to make the learners aware of the properties and potential hazards from lithium-ion batteries, how and why they must be closely monitored, and how lithium-ion battery fires can be prevented.


Lithium-ion batteries need to be charged, discharged, and managed in a much different way to the conventional batteries which crew are familiar with. Failure to carry out proper battery management can lead to exothermic reactions within the batteries, fires, and the release of toxic and flammable gasses.

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify why the use of lithium-ion batteries for propulsion has increased in recent years
  • Identify the main characteristics and potential risks of lithium-ion batteries used for propulsion
  • State what is meant by ‘Thermal runaway’ of lithium batteries and why it is dangerous
  • Identify the monitoring needed for lithium-ion batteries
  • Identify what can be done to prevent or contain lithium-ion battery fires
