Controlling Operation of ship and Care for Persons Onboard

  • 132 minutes
  • E-learning module

The marine environment is dangerous enough for an experienced seafarer, but consider how confusing it is for an uninitiated colleague.

Life on board a vessel can be different from what you are used to. When working on board a vessel, whether at sea, in port or in a repair yard, you need to be aware of your working environment.

This module has been developed for shore-based staff and contractors, usually with little or no seagoing experience, who may need to visit a vessel for some reason. It includes vessel familiarization, common hazards, risk management and PPE.

In particular, you need to know about some ship-specific safety regulations, working procedures and operations, as these will affect you as a visitor to the ship.

This module will summarise what to expect, what to do and most importantly, how to work safely in the marine environment.

After completing this module you will

  • Have an overview of a vessel, the crew and some of the rules and regulations that govern the shipping industry
  • Have knowledge about joining a vessel at a terminal or shipyard
  • Know the methods of boarding the vessel and what a familiarisation tour is
  • Be aware of the hazards on board a vessel
  • Be familiar with how to manage risks through Risk Assessment, Permit to Work and Lock Out / Tag Out
